Consumer Safety

Weeks, Jennifer. "Regulating Toxic Chemicals: Do we know enough about chemical risks?" CQ Researcher. January 23, 2009.
Chemicals are integral to many everyday products, from electronics and toys to building materials and household goods. But environmental, health and consumer advocates say the agencies responsible for protecting Americans from exposure to harmful chemicals are allowing too many dangerous substances into the market without testing them for toxicity. Some goods, such as medicines, are tested for safety before they can be sold, but many common products do not go through premarket safety screening. Many concerns focus on infants and young children, who are especially sensitive to toxic hazards. Chemical manufacturers say the existing regulatory system works effectively and can be tightened to address new concerns, but critics argue that a precautionary approach — which would require producers to show that materials are safe before they can be marketed — would protect consumers more fully. Presidential Campaign 2008

Jost, Kenneth. "The Obama Presidency: Can Barack Obama deliver the change he promises?" CQ Researcher. January 30, 2009.
As the 44th president of the United States, Barack Hussein Obama confronts a set of challenges more daunting perhaps than any chief executive has faced since the Great Depression and World War II. At home, the nation is in the second year of a recession that Obama warns may get worse before the economy starts to improve. Abroad, he faces the task of withdrawing U.S. forces from Iraq, reversing the deteriorating conditions in Afghanistan and trying to ease the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Still, Obama begins his four years in office with the biggest winning percentage of any president in 20 years and a strong Democratic majority in both houses of Congress. In addition, as the first African-American president, Obama starts with a reservoir of goodwill from Americans and people and governments around the world. But he began encountering criticism and opposition from Republicans in his first days in office as he filled in the details of his campaign theme: "Change We Can Believe In." From the CQ Researcher. Mexico's Drug War

Katel, Peter. "Mexico's Drug War." CQ Researcher 18.43 (2008): 1009-1032.

Is the violence spilling into the U.S.?A violent drug war between the Mexican government and vicious drug gangs is escalating just over the border in Mexico — and causing concern among U.S. law-enforcement officials and lawmakers. The cartels already effectively control significant stretches on the Mexican side of the border, and now they're expanding activities on the U.S. side, including kidnapping Americans. More than 5,300 people — gangsters, soldiers, police, journalists and other civilians — have been killed this year, more than double last year's toll. Some victims have been beheaded. The Bush administration has stepped up security assistance to Mexico, but so far the aid hasn't dented the gangs' firepower, which largely depends on smuggled U.S. weapons. Some prominent foreign-policy experts say the ultimate solution is preventing drug abuse in the United States, not expanding the Mexican government's arsenal.

Searching - Perform a keyword search on the catalog using the word “playscript.” All titles you find with this search contain scripts. To search for an individual play, add keywords from the title, as 'playscript death of a salesman.' To search for works by a playwright, add keywords from their name: 'playscript marsha norman.' Hint - Don't perform an AUTHOR or TITLE search - you will miss the many plays we hold in collections. For example, the keyword search 'playscript death of a salesman' locates 9 copies of the play in collections.
Our ebrary database also includes many ebooks on the topic, including play collections.  These may be read off-campus, either online or by downloading to compatible e-readers, and substantial portions (scenes, monologues) may be printed.  Instead of using the 'cbchawk' password for remote access it will prompt you for your student ID number so it can create an individual account for you.
