Mexico's Drug War

Katel, Peter. "Mexico's Drug War." CQ Researcher 18.43 (2008): 1009-1032.

Is the violence spilling into the U.S.?A violent drug war between the Mexican government and vicious drug gangs is escalating just over the border in Mexico — and causing concern among U.S. law-enforcement officials and lawmakers. The cartels already effectively control significant stretches on the Mexican side of the border, and now they're expanding activities on the U.S. side, including kidnapping Americans. More than 5,300 people — gangsters, soldiers, police, journalists and other civilians — have been killed this year, more than double last year's toll. Some victims have been beheaded. The Bush administration has stepped up security assistance to Mexico, but so far the aid hasn't dented the gangs' firepower, which largely depends on smuggled U.S. weapons. Some prominent foreign-policy experts say the ultimate solution is preventing drug abuse in the United States, not expanding the Mexican government's arsenal.

Pakistan & Mumbai Terror Attack

Articles

Kiener, Robert. "Crisis in Pakistan: Can the fragile democracy survive?" CQ Global Researcher Dec. 2008. South Asia experts warn that Pakistan — recently dubbed "the new center of the war against terrorism" — could become the world's first nuclear-armed "failed state." The Muslim country's new president faces a spike in terrorist bombings, rising Islamic fundamentalism, a weakened democracy and a faltering economy. Already, more people have been killed in suicide bombings in Pakistan during the first eight months of 2008 than in Iraq or Afghanistan. And Indian authorities suspect that Islamic terrorists from Pakistan-controlled Kashmir perpetrated last week's Mumbai terrorist attacks that killed 173 people. Another challenge for President Asif Ali Zardari and his relatively young nation: growing resentment about recent U.S. military incursions into terrorist-infested Pakistani tribal territories. Although the country has weathered many storms since its founding in 1947, experts wonder if recent developments threaten its survival. As the new administration tries to hold the disparate nation together, a strong military — with a long history of usurping civilian rule — is poised to take over once again. The world watches with growing concern to see if the fragile democracy can survive or if Pakistan — with its nuclear arsenal — will devolve into chaos.

Iran

Katel, Peter. "U.S. Policy on Iran." CQ Researcher 17.41 (2007): 961-984.
Would a nuclear-armed Iran endanger the United States?
The Bush administration is turning up the heat on Iran. In October President Bush said Iran's nuclear program raised the specter of World War III. Then Vice President Cheney warned of "serious consequences" if Iran stayed on course as a "terror-supporting state." The heated rhetoric is widely seen as calculated to raise the specter of military action against Iran. Indeed, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad calls the United States an international bully that's keeping Iraq violent to justify continued occupation. He also vows to maintain Iran's nuclear development program, which he says is not for creating weapons. But many observers — Israelis particularly — see the effort as a grave threat, prompting some U.S. hawks to advocate a preemptive strike on Iran's nuclear facilities. Other Iran-watchers say military action could further endanger U.S. forces fighting next door in Iraq. They urge the administration to aid dissidents rather than counter Iran by military force.

Should museums return relics to their country of origin?

Should museums return relics to their country of origin?
Bettelheim, A., & Adams, R. “Stolen antiquities.” CQ Researcher 17.14 (2007): 313-336. CQ Press. 13 April 2007.
An ancient vase at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art is fueling an intensifying ethical and legal debate about some of the world's most celebrated works of art. Two years ago, Italian authorities produced evidence the ancient vessel had been smuggled from Italy and demanded its return. Such prized artifacts have raised thorny questions about the ownership of cultural treasures in private collections and museums around the world. The controversy — and attendant criminal trials of alleged smugglers — is also shedding new light on the secretive world of antiquities collecting — a realm populated by tomb robbers, wealthy connoisseurs and aggressive dealers and curators. Some experts estimate that up to $4 billion worth of precious art is being illegally traded. Whatever their worth, ancient artworks are priceless to Italy, Egypt and other nations increasingly using cultural artifacts to exert political leverage and stoke national pride. Kahn, Jeremy. “Is the U.S. protecting foreign artifacts? Don’t ask.” New York Times (8 April 2007): 2.26. ProQuest. Columbia Basin Coll. Lib., Pasco, WA. 14 April 2007.

The Cultural Property Advisory Committee has been the focus of fierce battles between archaeologists, who say the art market fosters the looting of historic sites, and dealers, who say that broad import restrictions threaten collecting by private individuals and museums in the United States. Is the Committee making appropriate decisions to help other countries protect their cultural heritage?

Museum directors are seeking a legal way to purchase foreign antiquities. Many artifacts purchased in the past have been stolen or looted; now, citing national pride, some governments are demanding them back.
