Alcohol Abuse

Price, Tom. "Alcohol Abuse: Can underage drinking be curbed?" CQ Researcher 8 June 2012. Americans are abusing alcohol less than in the past with one exception: college students, who drink more and binge drink more often than nonstudents of similar age. And alcohol continues to extract a high toll from those who abuse it at any age, killing 80,000 Americans a year and draining more than $220 billion from the economy. Although high school students drink and binge less, bingeing accounts for 90 percent of the alcohol consumed by teens who drink. Health experts also worry about the effects of new products, especially flavored alcoholic drinks, which seem to encourage young women and girls to drink and drink more. To combat alcohol abuse, many educational institutions, community organizations and government agencies are stepping up efforts to promote abstinence among the young and responsible drinking by adults who do imbibe. The CBC Library does not routinely purchase book length biographies of actors; these may be found in the public libraries. Numerous biography reference articles may be found in print at the CBC Library, as well as in some of our online databases such as the ebrary title New Biographical Dictionary of Film by David Thomson (Knopf, 2004), and the Encyclopedia Britannica Online. Also try searching ebrary by keyword (name) or using a subject search such as Motion picture* AND Biography.
ProQuest holds many newspaper and magazine articles on actors; you may find you get better results by changing the search to 'person' and either searching last name first or using the 'look up' feature.

Playwrights The CBC Library's general biography resources mentioned above will also be useful for information about playwrights. In addition, playwrights are literary authors and are covered in literature reference sources. One database that we offer that contains many playwrights is ProQuest Learning: Literature.  We also have substantial print reference in literature; for instance, you will find reference articles about Tennessee Williams in:

Many of the playwrights listed are included in books in our Main collection - their writings, and scholarly analysis of their lives and writings; try a keyword or subject search of our Library Catalog. Articles may be found in EBSCOhost and ProQuest.  

The Richland Public Library includes the Biography Resource Center and the Literature Resource Center among their databases; the first may be useful for all three assignments, the last for the playwright presentation. All CBC Students may gain access, and even non-residents will have the fee waived if they show proof that they are a current student.

Eyewitness Testimony & Wrongful Convictions

Jost, Kenneth. Eyewitness Testimony: Could new safeguards prevent misidentifications?. CQ Researcher October 14, 2011. Eyewitness testimony is often essential to criminal prosecutions, but witnesses sometimes misidentify an innocent person. Misidentifications played a part in three-fourths of the 273 wrongful convictions confirmed over the past two decades by DNA exonerations. Eyewitness scientists have long known of the unreliability of witness identifications, as confirmed through experiments dating back to the early 20th century, but police have been slow in changing ID procedures. The Supreme Court established limited safeguards against unreliable identifications in the 1960s and '70s, but experts say the rulings have had little impact and may actually mislead jurors in determining the accuracy of an identification. Now, the New Jersey Supreme Court has ordered stricter standards on identification testimony in the state's courts, including special instructions on the risk of misidentification even by witnesses who are absolutely certain. 1. Searching the online Library Catalog. Click on the blue "Advanced Search" link and then limit your search to "Book, Not For Loan“, which are Reference books. Type in a broad subject term such as "biology", "nursing", "engineering" in the search box and hit "enter" key or the "search" button at the bottom of the screen.

2. Look through the search results and click on a title that looks relevant, then click on "Browse Shelf" to see other books next to it. Watch a 1.5-minute Tutorial.

3. You can also walk to the Reference Collection shelves located in the center of the Library, and with the Librarian’s help, find and browse the relevant section(s).

Spurred by the conservative Tea Party movement, Republican lawmakers point to the federal government's $14 trillion debt as an emergency that demands big cuts in domestic programs, including Social Security, plus tax cuts they say will spur economic growth. But Democrats say government spending is needed to sustain the economy while the private sector struggles back to health. They call for government investment in infrastructure and education, plus tax increases to strengthen programs such as Social Security for future generations. A decade ago the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office predicted that the federal government would run a $796 billion surplus in 2010, but that rosy future never materialized.   With the national debt now more than $10 trillion — twice what it was eight years ago — the country faces a dire financial future, some analysts argue. Over the past eight years, the Bush administration has run larger and larger annual deficits, adding to the national debt and restricting the government's ability to respond to a new crisis. Now, with the U.S. and global financial meltdown ushering in a potentially catastrophic economic slowdown, the next president — newly elected Sen. Barack Obama — will be under pressure to use government fiscal policy, such as tax cuts and government spending, to bolster the economy, even though those actions will raise the debt further. Besides wrestling with that dilemma, the new president also must face the question of how to pay for spiraling Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits for the nation's 77 million baby boomers.
